International Business, Natural Resources, and Arctic Circle

- Einingabær námskeið í samstarfi við Viðskiptadeild Háskólans á Akureyri

Yfirlit

Importance of international business is high in small economies since they are not as self-sufficient as large economies, and therefore tend to rely more on exports and imports than larger economies. It is therefore important for small and medium-sized firms in smaller economies to seek international business opportunities, to grow and gain from economies of scale in production.

Hagnýtar upplýsingar

International business may involve foreign direct investment (FDI) in another country, when firms with headquarters in particular country undertake FDI in another country, to gain access in a foreign market, and to reduce export cost, taking the economic geography into account. Also, country culture is important. This course addresses some of the theoretical basis of international business and investment (FDI). By undertaking foreign direct investment (FDI) a firm becomes a multinational entity (MNE).

The importance of natural resources for international business. The focus is on Iceland as a case country that is heavily dependent on exports, much related to rich natural resources.
Direct resource export from Iceland involves the fishing resource. Indirect resource export can be said to include tourism that is, to some degree, based on unspoiled nature and wilderness and harvesting of waterfalls for energy production. Looking at the importance of renewable and sustainable energy issues.

Paper, based on the ARCTIC CIRCLE conference www.arcticcircle.org
Students select seminars in the ARCTIC CIRCLE conferences, ore from recent years, with the aim of gaining focus on a particular ARCTIC issue. Students need to attend zoom meetings about selecting subjects and the paper set-up. The instructor and students will discuss the conference emphasis at a Zoom meeting, and students then need to submit a paper on a particular issue of their choosing, that has been addressed at the conference.

The course is 6 ECTS.
