Universities are increasingly expected not only to educate and conduct research, but also to act as drivers of innovation, creativity and societal development. Yet one of the greatest challenges facing higher education institutions today is how to create a culture where new ideas can emerge, be tested and lead to meaningful impact.

This Staff Week, hosted by the Continuing Education Department of the University of Akureyri, invites participants to explore how universities can strengthen innovation and entrepreneurial thinking across their institutions.

Through presentations, workshops, discussions and networking opportunities, participants will examine how innovation can be integrated into teaching, research, administration and external collaboration. The programme will showcase examples from the University of Akureyri and provide opportunities for participants to reflect on their own institutional contexts and exchange experiences with colleagues from across Europe.

Together, we will explore questions such as:

* How can universities create environments that encourage innovation and experimentation?
* What structures, partnerships and support systems help new ideas grow?
* How can entrepreneurial thinking be fostered among staff and students?
* What role can leadership play in building a culture of innovation?
* How can universities strengthen collaboration with industry, communities and public organisations?
* How can emerging technologies and new ways of working contribute to institutional development?

Participants will gain new perspectives, practical ideas and valuable international connections while engaging in discussions on the future role of higher education in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.

Whether you work in academic leadership, research, international relations, administration, student services or innovation support, this Staff Week offers an opportunity to learn from others, share experiences and return home with fresh ideas for strengthening innovation within your institution.

Location/Venue

All programme activities will take place at the University of Akureyri, located in the heart of North Iceland and in downtown Akureyri (except for the Mývatn excursion). The university campus offers modern facilities, inspiring views, and a welcoming academic environment – the perfect setting for meaningful exchange and collaboration.

Certificate of Participation

All participants will receive an official digital certificate of attendance issued via Diplomasafe, a secure and internationally recognized credentialing platform. The certificate will be sent electronically after the event and can be easily shared or stored for future reference.

This session explores how the University of Akureyri is strengthening its role in supporting innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration with society. Examples from current initiatives will illustrate how universities can connect people, ideas and impact through teaching, research, support services and external partnerships.

Participants will reflect on their own institutional contexts, identify common challenges and opportunities, and discuss possible next steps for building stronger innovation capacity across teaching, research, support services and external collaboration.

Travel Information

EasyJet offers a direct flight to Akureyri from Manchester and London. We advise you to look at that option when booking your trip since Domestic flights are quite expensive in Iceland.

Traveling to Akureyri is now easier than ever. Nestled in North Iceland, Akureyri is accessible by both domestic connections and direct international flights.

For participants traveling from mainland Europe, EasyJet offers direct flights between London and Akureyri, which align perfectly with the Erasmus Staff Week schedule.

This makes it convenient to attend the full programme or stay some extra nights and enjoy a relaxing weekend before heading home.

Alternatively, participants can fly to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and take a domestic flight from Reykjavík (RKV) to Akureyri (AEY) – a short 45-minute flight operated multiple times a day.

Overland travel from Reykjavík is also an option, offering a scenic 5–6 hour drive through Iceland’s diverse landscape.

No matter your route, getting to Akureyri is part of the adventure – and we’re happy to help you plan your journey if needed.

Participation Fee and What’s Included

The participation fee for the Erasmus Staff Week is 75,000 ISK (approx. 520 EUR).

This fee includes:

• All scheduled activities and workshops

• Daily lunches and coffee breaks

• A full-day excursion to Husavik with bus transport, guided tour, and lunch

• Welcome and farewell activities

• Access to local innovation hubs and institutions

Please note that accommodation and travel to Akureyri are not included in the fee. Participants are encouraged to explore various lodging options early, as availability can be limited in the autumn season.
