What to Expect – Highlights of the Programme

Take part in a unique 4-day experience at the University of Akureyri that blends AI, innovation, collaboration, and authentic Icelandic nature. During this Erasmus Staff Week, you’ll engage in inspiring sessions about the future of education, explore the role of AI in academia, and hear from experts on how technology is shaping learning environments – including real-world applications like telepresence robots.

In addition to professional enrichment, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with colleagues from across Europe, share knowledge, and build lasting networks. One full day is dedicated to a guided excursion to Lake Mývatn, one of North Iceland’s most captivating natural wonders.

Each day finishes in time to allow for personal exploration or social meetups, so bring your curiosity – both intellectual and cultural!

Registration Information

Please note that a minimum number of participants must be confirmed by 15th of September for the event to take place. The final registration deadline is 15th of October, but we encourage early registration due to limited availability.

Only a small number of spots are available, and last year more people applied than we were able to accept. Secure your place early to avoid disappointment!.

North Iceland is rich with unique attractions that combine natural beauty with relaxation and Icelandic culture. Whether you're looking to unwind after a day of engaging workshops or explore more of the region, here are some top suggestions:

• Skógarböðin (Forest Lagoon) – A geothermal spa surrounded by forested hills just outside Akureyri. Soak in warm waters while enjoying views of Eyjafjörður.

• Bjórböðin (Beer Spa) – Located in Árskógssandur, only 30 minutes from Akureyri, guests can bathe in warm beer and hops while sipping on a locally brewed ale.

• Northern Lights Tours (Aurora Hunting) – October is prime season for viewing the Northern Lights, and several guided tours are available in the area. Head out after dark for a chance to witness one of nature’s most magical displays.

• Akureyri Botanical Garden – One of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world, featuring a diverse collection of Arctic and international flora.

• Downtown Akureyri – Charming cafés, Icelandic design stores, and the iconic church Akureyrarkirkja offer cultural experiences within walking distance of the university.

• Whale Watching in Húsavík – If you're extending your stay, Húsavík (about 1.5 hours away) is a world-renowned destination for whale watching.

Location/Venue

All programme activities will take place at the University of Akureyri, located in the heart of North Iceland and in downtown Akureyri (except for the Mývatn excursion). The university campus offers modern facilities, inspiring views, and a welcoming academic environment – the perfect setting for meaningful exchange and collaboration.

Certificate of Participation

All participants will receive an official digital certificate of attendance issued via Diplomasafe, a secure and internationally recognized credentialing platform. The certificate will be sent electronically after the event and can be easily shared or stored for future reference.

Traveling to Akureyri is now easier than ever. Nestled in North Iceland, Akureyri is accessible by both domestic connections and direct international flights.

For participants traveling from mainland Europe, EasyJet offers direct flights between London and Akureyri, which align perfectly with the Erasmus Staff Week schedule.

This makes it convenient to attend the full programme or stay some extra nights and enjoy a relaxing weekend before heading home.

EasyJet has updated its 2026 flight schedule, which means the Tuesday might not arrive in time for the program.

Participants who prefer to travel on the Saturday flight are welcome to join meetings or an additional course day on Monday.

Alternatively, participants can fly to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and take a domestic flight from Reykjavík (RKV) to Akureyri (AEY) – a short 45-minute flight operated multiple times a day.

Overland travel from Reykjavík is also an option, offering a scenic 5–6 hour drive through Iceland’s diverse landscape.

Participation Fee and What’s Included

The participation fee for the Erasmus Staff Week is 75,000 ISK (approx. 510 EUR).

This fee includes:

• All scheduled activities and workshops

• Daily lunches and coffee breaks

• A full-day excursion to Lake Mývatn with bus transport, guided tour, and lunch

• Welcome and farewell activities

• Access to local innovation hubs and institutions

Please note that accommodation and travel to Akureyri are not included in the fee. Participants are encouraged to explore various lodging options early, as availability can be limited in the autumn season.
